Gallery 4 | New Innovation in Tiles and Bathrooms

8.27.2015

Gallery 4 is a new tile brand from the NZ family-owned bathroom company Smail & Co. A manufacturer and importer of bathroom wares since 1950, they own the well-known brands VCBC and Michel César, and are the importers of Burlington from the UK. The launch of Gallery 4 is an exciting addition and adds a unique design dimension to their current product range, connecting New Zealanders with some of the most distinctive tile and bathroom design products in the world. Their curated collection, sourced from abroad and locally, offers many products for the first time in New Zealand. From handmade artisan tiles and digitally coloured body porcelain to cast sinks and baths, new concepts and materials will inspire architects, designers and home owners alike.

The incredible Gallery 4 range includes Climatica Ceramiche from Italy and Huguet from Mallorca, who are combining local craftsmanship and innovations in materials science to produce tiles with depth of character and performance. I love that both of these companies display a great respect for tradition in their timeless flooring ranges, and a passion for fresh modern designs using age-old techniques. Huguet also provide a custom design service enabling clients to commission bespoke tiles, cladding, and kitchen/bathroom fittings.

At the other end of the spectrum, the young Italian design company 41zero42 is rewriting tradition by reimagining the ceramic tile, celebrating colour, texture and new materials in bold designs. It has developed some unique products and also reinvented a few classic tiles along the way.

In addition to these imported European products, Gallery 4 offers their own encaustic cement tile collection and custom design service. With characteristics similar to marble, the handmade tiles are highly durable and recyclable. First developed in France over 150 years ago, they are finding a renewed popularity in contemporary architecture for their natural look, waxy yet hard-wearing finish, and wide colour and pattern choice. While still a relatively new product in the New Zealand market, the team can advise on their use, and you can visit their showroom to see sample installations.

  1. Wow! Both companies seem amazing. The tiles from 41zero42 are absolutely beautiful, and the flooring from Gallery 4 is wonderful :)
