Ruin Retreat | A Dream Getaway in Stockholm

In the summer of 2017, Marie and Calle Gustavsson opened the doors to the Ruin Retreat. Located on the island of Värmdö in Stockholm, the stunning villa caters to both business groups and private guests. With facilities designed for exclusive summits, the villa is an ideal destination for conferences or events, but it also provides a unique getaway for those wanting an idyllic weekend in Stockholm.

The warm Nordic interior feature a soft grey and black palette with warm wood accents. Outdoors, the stunning pool and views make this a true dream destination!

I discovered this incredible project via Residence magazine and although I can pick up a little of the history and renovation process, the Google translate (from Swedish to English) isn't helping much! I did however find out some history from the Ruin Retreat site:

The ruins were built by the German brewer brothers Carl and Emil Hermann in the late 1890s as an enjoyable project to curb their wives’ homesickness to the hills of the Rhine Valley, in those days, ‘sprinkled’ with ruins. Two ruins were erected, one in bricks with large ballrooms. The other one was made of blasted rocks, left over from the construction of a water reservoir. Water was pumped up from the Baltic Sea with a pinwheel down on the beach - in the reservoir they had seals!

An amazing transformation, I love that the retreat has retained the original elements and brickwork. To see what the ruins looked like before, take a look here

Ruin Retreat offers boat transports from the city centre and welcome breakfast and lunches. Private chefs for dinners are available upon request, and there are several on-site spa treatments on offer. What more could you want?
