THE DESIGN CHASER

Blue Notes | An Edwardian Reinvention by Golden

11.13.2017

Award-winning Melbourne-based interior design practice Golden have transformed a stately Edwardian home into a cherished residence for a music-loving family. Minimalist lines, bold shapes and grand scales bring a modern edge to the original architecture, while a regal colour palette invigorates the space.

From Midnight to moody indigo and teal to Monet-inspired lilac, as chosen by the children, the striking use of colour carries through from room to room, creating a beautifully cohesive feel. Music also threads throughout with thoughtful detailing such as custom joinery in the music room cleverly designed to accommodate the family's musical instruments. The television-free living room features his-and-hers’ reading chairs and an oversized Molteni sofa, perfect for sprawling listening sessions around a cherished vinyl record player. The gorgeous abstract art work above the fireplace is by Caroline Walls

The master bedroom is a play of bold and muted colour. A custom Anna Charlesworth pendant hangs from the original ceiling rose, a plush linen bedhead runs the length of the room, and the bespoke window seat is dressed in a tailored Paul Smith textile.

Furnished with stunning Beetle Dining Chairs by Gubi, the dining area doubles as a children’s study. A beautiful window seat provides hidden storage for power and printer and a built in desk is paired with Arne Jacobsen Series7 Chairs by Fritz Hansen and the iconic Snoopy table lamp by Flos

The combined music and guest room is a central feature of the home, with its stately, custom joinery designed to fit a new sound system and speakers (and seamlessly hide all power and AV cables). In addition to choosing the Monet-inspired colour schemes in their rooms, the children also chose the playful door handles in the TV-room.

The lighting has been refreshed throughout the home to achieve a more considered, minimal approach. The feature pendant over the staircase was custom designed by LAAL, with both size and proportion tailored specifically for the space. The incredible stair runner is by Halcyon Lake

Showing how contemporary design can pay tribute to the spirit of a character home, the interiors strike a beautiful balance between pared back elegance and thoughtful use of colour.
