Mahina Candles

10.17.2014

Mahina is a boutique NZ candle company founded in 2009 by a dear friend of mine, Natalie Walsh. Incredibly smart and stylish, Natalie's natural affinity for beautiful fragrances and quality products heightened when she was living in France. Having travelled extensively around the world, she always picked up a new scented candle to bring home. This sparked her idea to produce a New Zealand premium fragranced candle range combining the best of France with Pacific provenance. By electing to work with a French parfumer to design their own fragrances, Mahina (whose name is inspired by the Luna Deity in Pacific cultures, meaning moon or moonlight), offers truly unique candles that will not only enhance the home, but help you to de-stress, and look after your general well-being.

I'm in awe of Natalie's knowledge when it comes to candles. Her background is in the wine industry and she has always had a ‘good nose’. She attributes her Niuean heritage on her mothers’ side for her ability to truly sense. “My mother is what we in the industry call ‘a super-sensor’; she can unravel the most complex fragrances, which I believe is linked to her heritage and upbringing, being closer to the land and that which it nurtures. Many people have commented to me that it is the sense of smell that most often evokes the strongest memories. We want our candles to elicit the same sense of relaxation and well-being that comes naturally on a Pacific Island”.

The Mahina Candles come in four exquisite fragrance combinations: White Night – Tubereuse & Gardenia; Eastern Splendour – Coriandrè & spice; Manor Born – Citron Vert, Basil and Mandarin; Empress Thé Blanc – White Tea with Jasmine. As you can see above, I'm currently burning a favourite, Empress Thé Blanc, as I work! The simple glass and monochrome packaging fits seamlessly into every room of our home, so you will no doubt be seeing a lot more of them!

Available throughout select retail stores, Mahina having just re-launched with a new  webshop, so that regardless of where you live or how you busy you are, you can experience the magic of Mahina by easily purchasing online. They would also make the perfect Christmas gift!
