TDC Curates Baya: 2024 Annual Collection Part 2

5.27.2024

Following on from Part 1 of this two-part series, which featured the residential shoot, here in Part 2, I carried out the set design, art direction, and styling for the Baya studio shoot.

In continuation of Baya’s theme of embracing the natural environment, I wanted to create an earthy, textural backdrop for the studio. To achieve this, I chose Porters Paints Interno Lime Wash in Irish Elk. Clean lines were offset by rounded forms, while tactile finishes in stone and wood, along with sculptural objects, drew from nature. Additionally, artworks such as Greer Clayton’s 'Day is Clearing' and Rachel Wegrzyn’s 'Volcanic' series further enhanced the theme. A standout hero piece—a striking Aubergine armchair by Ligne Roset—added a touch of drama.

For this shoot, I enjoyed creating a subtle yet captivating interplay of colours and textures using Baya's beautiful range of rugs, cushions, and throws. The styling was kept minimal to highlight the intricate textures and nuances of each piece, fostering a cosy and serene setting.

As part of the TDC Curates series, Baya interviewed me for their journal, where I share more styling insights along with some of my favourite products featured in the campaign. Take a look here: TDC Curates Baya

TDC Curates Baya: 2024 Annual Collection Part 1

5.21.2024

Last year I began working with Baya, a NZ design brand that creates considered pieces for living, crafted by artisan makers. From styling campaign imagery at inspiring residential locations to art directing and styling studio shoots, I feel right at home working with their stunning range of textile products. Developed for those with an eye for the refined who appreciate quality, Baya’s collections of rugs, cushions and throws align with my personal aesthetic and love for texture and neutral tones. These products, which I believe are pivotal in bringing spaces to life, embody the essence of what makes a house a home.

For the 2024 Annual Collection the team travelled to Raglan, to shoot at a beautiful property by Edwards White Architects, followed by an in-studio shoot. Sharing this in two parts, beginning with Raglan, my styling was inspired by the setting of Sisters Sanctuary—an architectural home nestled in bushland and coastal surroundings.

Baya’s collection pieces provided the ideal colour palette to reflect both the warm tones and textures found in the natural landscape and my personal love for neutral and earthy hues. I was particularly drawn to the calming tones of oatmeal and ecru, as well as the rich brown tones of cinnamon and cocoa.

To harmonise with the wood and concrete finishes of the architecture and provide a soft backdrop for showcasing this season’s warm palette, I incorporated pale wood elements and soft neutrals. The addition of ceramic pieces in sandy hues further evokes a sense of tranquility, mirroring the home’s seamless integration with its natural environment.

Città Introduces New Capsule Collections for 2022

4.14.2022

Taking a step back from the traditional seasonal approach to provide more time to deliver lasting products, New Zealand design company Città has released two capsule collections for 2022, with more to follow. Curated to live well beyond the current season, the first two collections, Capsule One and Two see an expansion to their much-loved textiles range, along with thoughtfully designed objects to enrich interior spaces, hand-sculptured pieces in marble, a new table series influenced by Japanese design, and more. I’ve picked out some highlights...

The Tatamu Tables are designed inhouse by David Moreland and Nikolai Sorensen. Despite their robust, solid oak construction, they are aesthetically light and elegant thanks to a design influenced by the oblique forms of origami structures. Aptly, the name Tatamu comes from the Japanese word meaning ‘to fold’ and the tables feature V-shaped legs that are visually reminiscent of folded pieces of paper. A silhouette that is tall and thin from one profile, and broad and flat from the other, the tables offer unique perspectives when viewed from different angles. Made from 100% solid American white oak, the collection includes a dining table in three sizes and a coffee table, all in a choice of natural or smoked oak finish.

Capsule One invites a playful palette and texture to the kitchen and bathroom with nostalgic woven plaid patterned tea towels and beautifully textured waffle towels

“We have been loving working with waffle weaves lately,” says Imogen, Città’s Head of Textile Design. “The intricate woven structure works to soften bold colour combinations whilst also adding depth and texture.”

The new collection includes beautifully sleek and minimally designed Salt and Pepper Grinders made from solid aluminium with a matte finish. Designed to enhance the kitchen and dinner table, the grinders feature a durable ceramic grinding mechanism that can be adjusted to grind finely or coarsely, while the orientation of the mill is designed to keep salt from spilling on your tabletop.

In addition to the grinders, Nikolai Sorensen and David Moreland have designed the Geo series consisting of hand-sculpted marble objects. Ideal for use as bookends, the pieces include a sphere, cone and wedge and can also be displayed on their own to add a sculptural touch to any space. Available in two earthy colours, the complex tones are reminiscent of the rich forest floor, as seen from above.

Città's talented inhouse textile designers Imogen Tunnicliffe and Sophie Clapson have expanded on Città's range of cushions and throws with cosy and tactile pieces in pure wool. I love the Hutt Wool Throw and Boucle Cushion Cover.

A selection of new designs is now available in Città retail stores and online at www.cittadesign.com, with more products from the Capsule Collections arriving over the coming weeks. To stay in the loop subscribe to the e-newsletter and follow Città on social

My Styling for Dulux in the Latest Issue of Homestyle

7.26.2021

Once again I have had the pleasure of teaming up with Dulux to create a nature-inspired living room for Two Ways With, in the latest issue of Homestyle. Along with fellow interior stylist and Dulux Colour Ambassador Alex Walls, our brief was to interpret the outside world for interiors using paint from the Dulux Colours of New Zealand collection.

Inspired by the changing seasons in the South Island — from the snow-capped mountains in winter to the sandy tones in summer and the deciduous trees turning burnt orange in autumn, I chose Dulux Dunsandel Half, Cardrona Double and Cashmere as my key paint colours.

To complement this calming backdrop, I selected various pieces made from natural materials like wood and wool to create a warm, cosy feel. The starting point was the beautiful Etoile rug by Armadillo and House of Grey from The Ivy House. Handcrafted ceramics in earthy browns and subtle orange inject extra texture and reflect seasonal changes, while the strong lines of the bookshelf are offset by the gentle curves of the seating and coffee table. With a focus on local design, the Elena Renker ceramics and all of the furniture pieces are by New Zealand designers.

Finally, one of my favourite elements is the Lamp de Marseille lamp designed by Le Corbusier for Nemo, which enhances the sculptural style of the space, and adds a playful touch.
