Origin Made Launch New Designs at Enter the Salon in Copenhagen

6.13.2024

Currently showing at 3daysofdesignEnter the Salon is a joint exhibition of international brands, where design, art and poetry converge, as the past intertwines with the present. Curated by designer Signe Hytte, and taking place within The Conary, a historic townhouse in Copenhagen, the showcase aims to foster quiet reflection, casual conversation, and the exploration of new perspectives.

The inspiring space provides the perfect setting for Origin Made who are launching Part II of their 2024 collection. They are joined by six other distinguished international brands—Karimoku Case, Carpe Diem Beds, Ambientec, Ladies & Gentlemen Studio, Silkeborg Uldspinderi and August Sandgren

Based in Porto, Origin Made blends modern design sensibilities with masterful craft techniques honed over generations to create collectible furniture, objects, and lighting that celebrate thoughtful design and the authenticity of the human touch. The brand collaborates directly with solo artisans and skilled craftspeople who preserve traditional ways of making. These makers breathe life into their creations, transforming simple objects into conduits of cultural richness and individual mastery.

Part II of Origin Made's 2024 collection builds upon the success of Part I, further exploring the theme of "Materials Intention", with the thoughtful application of natural materials to new shapes, resulting in pieces that feature a captivating interplay of textures and forms. Highlights include the Barco and Calabash Basket Sculptures created in collaboration with renowned Galician artisan Idoia Cuesta, the Flan Side Tables borne of a partnership between Origin Made's creative director, Gabriel Tan, and master ceramicist Joaquim Pombal, and the Lado Vase by Norm Architects.

Minimal and geometric wall-mounted vases, crafted in corten steel, Lado explores a new vast typology by opening up new possibilities for displaying dried plants and flowers in an unusual and elegant way.

Basket weaving sees Origin Made venture into a new craft while pushing the boundaries of traditional basketry. The combination of fully recyclable monofilament fishing lines from Galicia with natural rattan (Barco), and chestnut veneer (Calabash) is a modern and unique take on how basket weaving can create functional art objects.

Testament to yet another new successful collaboration, the Flan side tables feature clay plinths with soft box forms in two varying heights and are ideal for elevating and displaying treasured collectibles.

Enter the Salon celebrates the famous salons that were pivotal in hosting and fostering the avant-garde of the time in Paris, London, Berlin, Copenhagen and beyond—truly vibrant gatherings where intellectuals and creatives exchanged fresh ideas and challenged societal norms. The exhibition invites guests to visit The Canary with the same spirit—to inspire each other and talk, listen and think with an open mind, together.

Challenging the idea of the typical fair stand as a showcase, Enter the Salon is designed to feel like a culturally savvy, indelibly tasteful and strangely timeless private residence with plenty of layers to dive into.

"My vision is to do away with the classic fair stand and tell a story instead. One where every guest can explore multiple layers and find their own to be inspired by."—Signe Hytte, Curator, Enter the Salon.

A place where new movements start casually over drinks and hors d’oeuvres, and where the beauty of art and design and the importance of a great party carry equal weight to the people privileged enough to inhabit the rooms.

Throughout, a carefully curated selection of brands mix with each other to form a lived-in, informal, and slightly opulent red thread. Each brand fulfills their own essential role in the larger play that unfolds inside.

The common denominator for all the brands is an unwavering dedication to craftsmanship and quality over passing trends and fads, always with a focus on how uncompromising techniques can be emphasised in their pieces. Through intricate wood joinery, advanced LED technology, textile installations and an insistence on keeping hand-crafted work alive, the brands create the new by looking to the refined traditions of the past.

The beating heart of the exhibition is the sprawling Atrium that greets you with warmth and vibrancy. Here, talks, breakfasts and events take place, views are exchanged, and laughter rings out. It’s also where you can retreat from the hustle and bustle of the busy festival.

Joséphine Fossey Office: Crafting a New Chapter for Château Lestang 1573

7.28.2023

Rémy Graillot loves to entertain and takes pleasure in preserving and adding to the rich legacy of his property. To bring a fresh perspective to this endeavour, he enlisted Joséphine Fossey, head of the eponymous research and design studio, to provide artistic direction for the project. Joséphine's approach is defined by her commitment to finding the right balance between history and the new chapter, blending heritage with contemporary elements, to craft an exceptional tale that continues to unfold.

Joséphine's aim is to make the Château a place dedicated to art in all its forms, starting with literature, which occupies a special place in the history of the estate. Ancient correspondences exchanged between Hyde de Neuville and Chateaubriand inspired the name of the special cuvée, "L'illustre voyageur". The label illustration was entrusted to American artist Michael McGregor, who paid homage to this special friendship by imagining a lunch on the grass between the two men. The estate will also host literary residencies in the future.

Serving as a hub for sharing and creativity, the winery is the epicentre of the Château where Joséphine Fossey has designed a singular décor, guided by a principle of total art, mixing vintage and contemporary, favouring noble materials, natural materials and know-how. Notably, the work of Pauline Esparon, a talented emerging designer, catches the eye. Using raw linen fibre, Pauline reveals the material's natural qualities while contemplating the transformative process. By prioritizing local production, Pauline breathes new life into the material, unlocking its untapped potential. This exploratory approach beautifully aligns with the DNA of Lestang 1573. Her linen-fibre screen stands alongside the Pigreco chairs designed by Tobia Scarpa for Tacchini, while the rope suspension by Audou & Minet is in dialogue with the sculpted plaster fixtures by designer Pierre Castanier and Mathias Kiss’ bespoke rug.

The décor responds not only to the natural setting, but also to the in-situ installation by artist Mathias Kiss, conceived as the first highlight of an ambitious art collection. This perennial work of art contrasts with the environment, while also complementing it. Delivering a free and personal interpretation of the vine, both indoors and out, Mathias Kiss uses mirrors to reflect and transform the space, artfully capturing and playing with light. The installation blurs the boundaries between art and craft, reality and illusion, simultaneously subverting and questioning the traditional purpose of mirrors. Other artists will be invited to take part, fostering the property's evolution with the changing seasons and new creations.

By embracing literature and other art forms, Joséphine Fossey has made the Château a true sanctuary for artistic expression, fostering an environment where creativity can thrive. Every element, ranging from the bottle choice and label design to the brand's visual identity, winery decoration, artistic collaborations, and events, contributes to achieving the perfect blend of historical roots and contemporary aesthetics for Lestang 1573.

A New Wave | Nightworks Introduces the Tasman Pendant Range

8.25.2022

New Zealand-based lighting studio Nightworks are known worldwide for their exquisite lighting designs. An original design approach, meticulous attention to detail and products designed to last in solid raw material ensure that every project stands out from the ordinary. Their latest release, Tasman, is a family of modular pendant lights that express a gentle waving form. A poetic design, developed to its fullest potential, Tasman is a beautiful alternative to traditional lineal pendants, designed to harmoniously integrate into any interior environment.

Available in single, double and triple curve options, the wave form is accentuated as further curve modules are added. The minimal exterior conceals a clever electrical system that allows for the modules to connect together seamlessly, while the dimmable LED is diffused to offer a soft white glow.

"Tasman began as a simple line sketch of three waves, drawing inspiration from our love of the ocean. We wanted to create a product that stood out in the fiercely competitive lineal pendant market, to make something modular, yet sculptural was paramount." —Nightworks Co-founder and Lighting Designer Ben Wahrlich

Made with sustainability in mind, the precision machined components are made from recycled aluminium that can be recycled again at end of life. The design utilises energy efficient LED technology and the packaging is plastic free.

"Named Tasman in reference to the Tasman Sea that connects New Zealand and Australia, the range is available in four colours that reference the natural seascapes throughout the two countries: Salt, Navy, Bay and Bonfire." —Nightworks Co-founder and Lighting Designer Ben Wahrlich

The name Tasman and the inspiration behind the design perfectly reflect the brand’s unique history. Founded in New Zealand in 2019 by husband and wife team, Ben and Kiri Wahrlich, Nightworks was originally established in 2008 in Sydney, Australia - as award-winning lighting studio ANAESTHETIC. Quickly establishing a loyal following around the world, the couple returned to New Zealand in 2017 where they sought to refresh the brand to echo a modern Kiwi lifestyle, and in doing so, Nightworks was born.

A stunning collection that is sure to make waves, Tasman has already been selected as a finalist in the 2022 Best Awards

nau Introduces a New Collection for 2021 by Renowned Australian Designers

10.25.2021

Responding to the needs and desires that have emerged during the past two extraordinary years, and carving out a fresh perspective for authentic design, nau introduces a new furniture and lighting collection for 2021 by a collective of Australia’s most renowned designers. Comprising a comprehensive outdoor range, a locally crafted flat-pack furniture series and an edit of functional, refined designs for both residential and commercial settings, the new designs offer an exceptional mix of versatility, functionality, comfort and quality. All designed and made in Australia, here's a look at the new collection pieces.

Nami by Tom Fereday
Nami, meaning ‘wave’ in Japanese, is a comprehensive furniture collection named after its signature timber profile that seamlessly flows into adjoining components. Handcrafted in NSW from sustainably certified solid timber, Nami’s sculpted form is a celebration of natural materials. Directional grain details achieved through precision craftsmanship appear throughout the collection, giving each piece an organic artfulness. Comprising a range of tables, a sofa, armchair, ottoman and bed, Nami is a humble yet elevated collection that has been designed to last a lifetime.

‘The Nami collection originated from research and exploration into the essential key furniture items needed for any home unbiased by scale or location of how people live. Sensitive to the consideration of how people truly live today, the entire range of large items from tables to beds may be simply assembled or disassembled with a single allen key, resulting in an incredibly strong assembly truly designed to last a lifetime. At its essence the Nami range was developed to age elegantly through enduring minimal solid timber design paired with intelligent and considered construction.’ — Tom Fereday

Broad by Kate Stokes
Named after its distinctive scale and slimline silhouette, Broad is a classic yet contemporary pendant that creates intimacy in even the largest of spaces. Offering a soft diffusion of light with an ambient, even glow, Broad was designed to be placed above the centre of a table – from dining to meeting. Striking enough to command attention yet streamlined enough to fit in within any space, Broad does more than just illuminate; it centres conversations, focus and atmosphere. With a single stem-like hanging point, Broad is available with either a 500mm or 800mm width diameter, in a colour palette of black, white or eucalypt.

‘Broad is intended to have a gentle, yet commanding presence. Its slim, expansive profile provides an elegant focal point in the room, particularly effective when hung low over a dining table. I wanted to design a really effective light source that would still be soft on the eye and create a feeling of intimacy.' — Kate Stokes

Terrace by Adam Cornish
The 2021 collection includes nau’s first venture into the outdoors with three new collections by Melbourne-based designer Adam Cornish. Characterised by graphic lines, subtle curves and a clean visual language, Terrace is an outdoor seating series that is as comfortable as it is functional. Hand-crafted in Melbourne, Terrace is made from durable stainless-steel wires that are curved incrementally to create an inviting and embracing seat.

From long al-fresco lunches to uninterrupted lounging, this comprehensive collection is designed to withstand harsh Australian conditions and accommodate all kinds of outdoor living. Spanning commercial to residential to hospitality applications, Terrace is available in a selection of finishes in lounge chair, dining chair and bar stool options.

‘The Terrace collection aims to create a quaint, nearly transparent visual language. I wanted to achieve a product that neither stands out nor is lost in its surrounding environment. The formed wire construction is reminiscent of hand sketched gestures.' — Adam Cornish

Yuki by Adam Cornish
Inspired by the perfect proportions of the Japanese shoji screen, Yuki is an exceptionally comfortable outdoor seating series comprising a sofa and an armchair. Its graphic frame features structural curves that appear playfully inflated, adding to the visual interest and overall comfort of the collection. Nesting into the frame in an intentional contrast between hard and soft are large, inviting cushions. Made in Melbourne from stainless steel, premium exterior-grade foam and high-performance outdoor fabrics, Yuki is designed robustly enough to be used across a variety of public or private contexts.

‘Yuki is all about contrast and juxtaposition. The frame has a subtlety inflated quality manufactured from robust and durable stainless steel. The graphic frame construction envelops the generous, slightly chubby upholstery, creating the perfect nesting experience.’— Adam Cornish

Strand Bistro Table Outdoor by Adam Cornish
The newest addition to the Strand collection by Adam Cornish is the Strand Bistro Outdoor Table in both dining and bar height. The philosophy behind Strand is that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts; each component works with the other to create pieces that rely solely on their unison. Inspired by the vintage steel furniture from the 1950s, the collection is made from simple, tactile materials, chosen for their honesty and ability to age with dignity. Taking cues from braided steel cables, three ‘strands’ work in unison to create the outline of the design. Quaint, intricate and tactile, Strand is humble enough for homes and cafes, yet strong and ergonomically suited to commercial applications.

‘Australian culture is synonymous with outdoor living, we have amazing weather and love to eat and entertain outdoors. The new outdoor collections utilise premium stainless construction for durability, with paired back, delicate silhouettes creating cohesion with the surrounding architecture.’ — Adam Cornish

Harbour by Adam Goodrum
A place to rest, retreat, recover, Harbour feels like home. Superior quality and incomparable comfort characterise the Harbour collection by Adam Goodrum. From the structural bows crafted from solid timber to the leather strapping that is latticed by hand, Harbour is a homage to craftsmanship. Its hand-woven papercord frame, which nods to Scandinavian craft traditions of the ’50s and ’60s, creates a sculptural silhouette that is both inviting and supportive. Its softly curved structure echoes the rounded form of the pillows within, creating comfortable nooks that encourage long and lasting calm. Refined yet humble, the Harbour collection includes an armchair, sofa and bed.

‘Harbour comes from the desire to create a sofa collection of the highest quality and comfort and to capture the aesthetic of contemporary Australian life. All components are revealed through honest assembly to celebrate the handmade; with the paper rope echoing the rigging of ships and its slouched cushions the relaxed attitude of a ship at dock.’ — Adam Goodrum

Softply, Don and Rib by Adam Goodrum
Following the success of Adam Goodrum’s Chameleon table system and Sofala modular sofa, his new designs expand nau’s commercial offerings, with the inclusion of Softply, Don and Rib, all of which interchange seamlessly between commercial and residential environments.

Softply is a seating collection that pushes the boundaries of materiality. Typically a rigid material, plywood is press-moulded into a unique 3-directional curve to create a distinctive backrest that cascades elegantly over a stainless-steel frame and doubles as a sweeping armrest. This curved back is informed by geometry to create an ergonomically supportive chair that promotes a relaxed comfort. Softply’s 360-degree design considers every viewpoint, particularly the back from which chairs and stools are most commonly viewed. The Softply collection comprises a stackable chair and both bar and counter height stools in a selection of finishes.

Don is an exploration of craftsmanship, comfort and considered details. Elegantly draped timber dons a sturdy wooden frame to create a chair that is strong and durable yet lightweight. Don’s angled back doubles as a functional armrest to encourage movement, whilst the gently curved seat offers ergonomic support, eliminating pressure points in the legs of the sitter. With playful details such as the visible connection between the frame and seat reminiscent of cufflinks, Don has a uniquely compact footprint suitable for a variety of commercial contexts.

Inspired by Sydney’s iconic MLC centre by architect Harry Seidler, Rib is the first pedestal table in the nau collection. With a striking architectural aesthetic, Rib’s circular form offer a softness within commercial and residential spaces. Visually light but deceptively robust, the fluted ribs allow maximum stability in their elevation of the tabletop. Designed for meeting, conversation and togetherness, Rib is an inviting and functional table that allows for optional integrated power and data supply. Rib is available in walnut, oak, ash and black stained ash.
