The Scandinavian Home | A New Book by Niki Brantmark

4.21.2017

Yesterday I shared a little teaser of my beautiful new book The Scandinavian Home : Interiors inspired by light on Instagram. Written by the lovely Niki Brantmark of world renowned blog My Scandinavian Home, the book showcases the distinctive style that Scandinavia is famous for: homes are pared-back and simple, and form and function are combined to create aesthetically pleasing and practical interiors. House designs tend to maximise the amount of natural light that enters the home and are made warm and cosy for the cold winter months.

Styling & photography by Michelle Halford for TDC

The Scandinavian Home showcases a wide range of these beautiful homes from city dwellings, with both modern apartments and smart townhouses to country homes, which show the Scandinavian take on country style with laid-back, bohemian homes. Also featured are stunning retreats, including a Norwegian mountain cabin and a Danish beach house.

'Renovated Serenity' is one of the homes that I was immediately drawn to. Located on the west coast of Skåne in southern Sweden, it is owned by interior stylist and store owner Josephine Ekström, her engineer husband and three children. Niki who moved to Sweden from London ten years ago, writes effortlessly about the home's eclectic blend of iconic design pieces and vintage finds, the warm textural elements and unique details. Paired with stunning photography by James Gardiner, it's easy to get lost inside the beautiful pages. I can't wait to read more.

Our Home on Design*Sponge + Giveaway Reminder

12.17.2014

As one of the world's biggest interior blogs, and one that I have followed for many years, Design*Sponge continually inspires. Since launching back in 2004, Brooklyn-based founder Grace Bonney has been declared a “Martha Stewart Living for the Millennials” by the New York Times, with Design*Sponge reaching over 1 million readers per day. Needless to say, when I was approached about having our home featured in their most loved post Sneak Peeks, I very quickly said yes! Published early this morning, I was very excited jumping out of bed for a read first thing.

My "favourite thing about our home" hand written note, that every homeowner is required to write for the Design*Sponge Sneak Peeks post

An added bonus is that it coincides with a recent redesign of Design*Sponge. The sixth one in 10 years, it has marked a an important time of reflection for Grace, resulting in a beautiful 'manifesto of sorts', comprising 10 statements centred around what the blog stands for. Laying their hearts, minds and beliefs on the table, their admirable goal is to connect with even more with readers as they move forward, into what will no doubt be a continually growing and exciting future for Design*Sponge

As a blogger, influencer, writer, stylist and home-owner every one of the statements resonated with me. It was hard to choose as they are all so good, but here are a few that really stood out.

My favourite statement of all, 'The creative community online has the power to transform,  not just spaces, but lives', is explained here by Grace:

Design blogs aren't just about decorating. We're helping each other start businesses, find collaborators and friends, and more importantly, share ideas and tips that help us all build happier homes. When people have a place where they feel happy, safe and comfortable, good things can happen.

I agree whole-heartedly with this. Even though I have only been blogging for a short time in comparison, I have seen this on-flow of positivity first-hand. Read through all of the 10 statements here, and take a look at my home on Design*Sponge here

One more VERY important thing before I go, in case you missed my post last Friday. I have a signed copy award winning interior designer Greg Natale's new book, The Tailored Interior to give away, thanks to the first and only current NZ stockist Designer Rugs

A must-have coffee table book, it is filled with pages of Greg's stunning interior projects along with his generous and unique view into the creative process, his passions, experiences, advice and the philosophy behind his richly tailored, sophisticated style. For further info, and a look inside the beautiful book, take a look here.

To enter, simply email enter@thedesignchaser.com with The Tailored Interior in the subject line. Please include your full name in the email. The competition is open to New Zealand residents only and will close tomorrow, Thursday 18th December at 8am. The winner will be chosen by random.org and announced on the blog and Facebook page, and contacted via email to arrange shipping.

TEAM.WORK Launch | Studio Home + Trestle Union

10.20.2014

A few weeks ago I caught up with NZ design blogger Julia Atkinson of Studio Home, following the recent launch of her exciting new collaboration series, TEAM.WORK. As the inspiring curator and voice behind one of the first design based blogs launching down under in 2008, I was excited to learn more about how she has now taken Studio Home's involvement with New Zealand and Australian creative businesses to new heights.

Together with young Auckland designers Mike Grobelny and Nikolai Sorenson of Trestle Union, they set about producing something new and different to their existing range of clean, modern trestle tables (which as you know I'm a big fan of). The result? A gorgeous collection of pot plant stands available in three heights and three colourways. One look at them and I was sold! With a simple, minimalist design that is both stylish and functional, I jumped at the chance to style one of these babies in my own home. Fitting seamlessly into every corner, I was impressed with the versatility of my small white stand which can hold pots of varying shapes and sizes.

Styling and Photography by Michelle Halford for T.D.C

How great does it look alongside our String shelf? With three different sizes to choose from, the options are endless when it comes to displaying pots and plants. I also love how they look in a set, with a mix of hanging varieties, fresh flowers, pots and glass vases as shown below.

In addition to glossy black and white powder coating, the plant stands are available in a clear coat option which brings out the raw industrial finish of the metal wire. They can be bought separately or as a set of three direct from the Trestle Union online store with free shipping within New Zealand and a flat $35 dollar rate to Australia.

Bravo to Julia for kicking off TEAM.WORK with a bang. I'm already looking forward to the next collaboration!

Interior Styling | The Simple Hanger

9.10.2014

Ideal for small spaces, simple ladders, freestanding clothing racks and hanging rails are not only functional items for the home, they provide an interesting design element for any interior space.

Perfect for bedrooms, ladders provide a place to hang throws and keep clothes off the floor (my pet peeve). Currently I have my eye on the Menu Ladder, which is both stunning and versatile. Also available in black, I have the white and oak one (shown above as a bathroom towel rack) in mind for our living room to hang magazines and the odd throw. It would also work well beside the kids desks to hang their favourite books, and of course the bedroom.

Mounted to the wall or ceiling, clothing rails are great for the hallway for hanging coats, or in the bedroom where there is insufficient wardrobe space.

Images 1 | 2 | 3 | 4

Even though we have a walk-in wardrobe, I love the idea of a very minimalist clothing rail suspended from the ceiling to hang a few favourite wardrobe items, or those currently on high rotation. Interior stylist Annaleena Leino produces an incredible range of rails, including a round rail, shown below in an amazing Soho Apartment bedroom designed by New York-based architect Amee Allsop, whose work I recently featured hereThey are certainly not limited to the bedroom either. I love how Jennifer Hagler has worked one into her kitchen below.

There are also plenty of DIY options around, that will have you running to the hardware store. Here are some from three of my favourite bloggers. Follow the links below for step by step instructions.

Ivania Carpio of Love Aesthetics has dreamed up numerous clever wardrobe-related DIY's, which you will find the links to over here

Here are a few more of my top picks.

And for those of you who have missed them featured on the blog before, I also love the ferm LIVING Clothes Rack and the Toj Clothes Rack by Normann Copenhagen

Homes to Inspire | Blogger Style

7.02.2014

After rushing around yesterday squeezing in some client catch-ups before the school holidays arrive next week, this post is a day late, but the good thing is I discovered another lovely home to include in the mix. While I would love to have a more structured schedule of posts, especially because I am such a 'routine' person, in reality I enjoy being able to see where the day takes me. I guess that's the beauty of blogging after all.

Something else that comes with the territory of being a blogger, especially those in the field of interiors, is that we love to put what we learn into practice in our own homes. I love seeing how other bloggers work their style and today I wanted to share a couple of current faves with you.

The new discovery I mentioned above is the home of Sofia, a Mum of two living in Lidingö, northeast of Stockholm. A fellow-lover of black and white, her home has a really nice relaxed Scandi vibe. I love the way she has mixed the new with the old and layered in cosy textures and lots of greenery. Her picture wall, a mix of black and white photographs is a standout feature. Scroll through her blog Strawberry Dreams, and you will find plenty more inspo.

Based in Finland, the delightful blog Da Daaa has been on my radar for some time. Author Anna Pirkola regularly posts photos of her gorgeous home in Helsinki, where she lives with her partner Joel and their two young daughters. In addition to blogging, Anna works as a concept designer and stylist for Duotone studio. I found it hard picking which photos to share as they are all so good, but my favourites are those of her picture wall (no surprises there) and DIY shelving unit made of boxes, that houses their impressive collection of LPs. Like me, Anna has a penchant for beautiful Scandinavian brands Artek, String and Muuto. Be sure to follow along here

Interview with Sarah Van Peteghem | Fantastic Frank Berlin

5.09.2014

Sarah Van Peteghem is an interior stylist, designer and blogger based in Berlin. She is also the author of the beautiful blog Coco Lapine, which I've been following for some time. Recently Sarah started styling homes for the real estate site Fantastic Frank. Founded in Sweden, the company is known for making every home look stylish and inviting, by enlisting the help of photographers and stylists from the interior design, architecture and fashion industries.

I'm fascinated with the way the company works, because they take a very different approach to that of the NZ real estate market. While there may be some home staging here, the photos are still taken in a traditional real estate style, using wide angle lenses. The lights are turned on and things like TV's and fridges are in full view! Fantastic Frank on the other hand, create photographs that would not seem out of place in the pages of the best interior design magazines, and that's why you will see them regularly doing the rounds in the blogosphere. I have featured Swedish homes from Fantastic Frank several times here on the blog, and I'm excited to be sharing one from Berlin today, where they have recently opened up a new office.

Having been working with Fantastic Frank in Berlin, Sarah got in touch to let me know about this latest project. She says that even though Fantastic Frank and other real estate agents like Alvhem and Stadshem have been around for quite a while in Sweden and their approach is known there, it is still quite new for Berlin. I thought I would take the opportunity to ask Sarah some questions and share her latest work with you.

Can you tell me a bit about your background and how the styling work for Fantastic Frank come about?

I studied Product design and Interaction Design in Belgium and the Netherlands and moved to Berlin to work as a designer for a company that produces hardware and software for music producers. Even though I like that a lot, I felt the need to express myself in another way as well and started my blog to share my passion for interiors. I'm always looking for interior inspiration and often try out different compositions in my own home and post them on Instagram.  The people from Fantastic Frank picked up on that and asked me to do a styling project for them at the beginning of this year. It was a very fun task to do!

How many projects with Fantastic Frank have you done now?

So far I have done three (1, 2, 3) and there is another one planned for later this week, so I'm working very hard to get everything ready for the shoot.

How would you describe your own personal aesthetic and how does this translate to the homes you style?

I'm always very inspired by Scandinavian interiors and I guess you can also notice that in the homes I style. I don't really think about it though, if there is something I like and I think it fits in the home, I just use it, regardless of which style it has.

What have you learnt along the way?

To take a look beforehand at what are the interesting angles to be shot. The home has to be presented with a relatively small amount of pictures, so it's crucial to know in advance which areas are going to appear in the shots and from which angles.

Tell us a bit more about the collaboration with Llot Llov and the products used.

Llot Llov is a design company from Berlin with a wide range of very original and fun products. I first came to know them from their Matt lights - a woollen light with a very long cable which can be knotted together to create interesting shapes. When I figured out they were based in Berlin I immediately contacted them to work together. I think their designs and especially their lamps worked great in this tall home. And it was of course very interesting for me to get to know Anja and Jacob behind the brand and pay a visit to their workshop.

You also created some of the prints used in this home. Tell us about those.

Yes, the prints that you see in the living room and bedroom are geometric compositions that we (me and my boyfriend) composed out of pictures of moving objects. I think they turned out to be quite interesting, so I will soon add them to the range of prints available in my shop.

Where is this home situated?

The home is located in Prenzlauer Berg, which is one of my favourite areas in Berlin. It has a lot of old buildings like this one with high ceilings and nice facades and there are coffee places around every corner. I'm actually looking to move around that area myself, but unfortunately I'm not the only one with that idea.

Huge thanks to Sarah for taking the time to answer these questions for us. I'm sure you'll join me in following both her blog, and future work with Fantastic Frank

Have a lovely weekend, especially the Mums who are celebrating Mother's Day on Sunday, and don't forget to enter this week's Worldwide Giveaway. I'm looking forward to announcing the five winners on Monday morning!

Bedroom Walls | Blogger Inspo

4.30.2014

I've purposely kept our bedroom very simple. A place to escape at night from the day-to-day chaos, I like it to be as uncluttered as possible. With sliding doors to the outside, a window above the bed and an open walk-in wardrobe and ensuite, there is still some wall space for me to play with. Hard to believe it's still bare, especially what with my love of art prints and picture walls, but I do look forward to adding the finishing touches and sharing it with you in due course.

With plenty of Scandi-style inspiration out there to draw from, I've picked out some ideas that I love from three of my favourite bloggers. The first is Jennifer Hagler from A Merry Mishap who nails the understated look every time. Perfect for keeping a current magazine or book bedside, this Book Hanger by Sanna Trotsman is most definitely on my wishlist.

Painting a wall in a dark colour is a brave move, but one that pays off as shown here by Nina Holst of Stylizimo. The round mirror is also a nice touch.

On the opposite side of Nina's room is this clever DIY idea. She has attached an Ikea curtain rod, which she uses to plan her outfits for the following day, or even week! FYI Nina has an AMAZING walk in wardrobe which she created herself on a low budget. A must-see, check it out here

I'm always looking for ways of storing and displaying jewellery, and Nina's Wave hangers from Design House Stockholm are a great idea.

Nina is a master at changing things up, and her bedroom is constantly evolving. For those of you who like to embrace colour, here is her current look, featuring a beautiful soft teal shade.

I saved this one for last, because it combines three fabulous ideas in one: a dark wall, picture ledge (painted in the same colour) and gallery wall (inspired by this). Executed beautifully by Deborah Gordon of Ollie & Seb's Haus, the images speak for themselves.

Which look do you like?
