TDC Curates Baya: 2024 Annual Collection Part 1

5.21.2024

Last year I began working with Baya, a NZ design brand that creates considered pieces for living, crafted by artisan makers. From styling campaign imagery at inspiring residential locations to art directing and styling studio shoots, I feel right at home working with their stunning range of textile products. Developed for those with an eye for the refined who appreciate quality, Baya’s collections of rugs, cushions and throws align with my personal aesthetic and love for texture and neutral tones. These products, which I believe are pivotal in bringing spaces to life, embody the essence of what makes a house a home.

For the 2024 Annual Collection the team travelled to Raglan, to shoot at a beautiful property by Edwards White Architects, followed by an in-studio shoot. Sharing this in two parts, beginning with Raglan, my styling was inspired by the setting of Sisters Sanctuary—an architectural home nestled in bushland and coastal surroundings.

Baya’s collection pieces provided the ideal colour palette to reflect both the warm tones and textures found in the natural landscape and my personal love for neutral and earthy hues. I was particularly drawn to the calming tones of oatmeal and ecru, as well as the rich brown tones of cinnamon and cocoa.

To harmonise with the wood and concrete finishes of the architecture and provide a soft backdrop for showcasing this season’s warm palette, I incorporated pale wood elements and soft neutrals. The addition of ceramic pieces in sandy hues further evokes a sense of tranquility, mirroring the home’s seamless integration with its natural environment.

As part of the TDC Curates series, Baya interviewed me for their journal, where I share more styling insights along with some of my favourite products featured in the campaign. Take a look here: TDC Curates Baya

TDC Collaboration with Surround by Laminex™ and Dulux

8.01.2022

Recently I teamed up with Laminex and Dulux to showcase Surround by Laminex™, a new range of pre-primed, ready to paint decorative wall panels. Asked to choose two of my favourite profiles and use my signature Nordic-inspired style to create two spaces, here's what I came up with...

The first space is a light, earth-toned living room featuring Surround by Laminex Demi Round 20, and the second is a moody bedroom featuring Surround by Laminex Classic VJ 100. I chose these two Surround by Laminex profiles to showcase contrasting styles and their versatility in different spaces - both classical and contemporary. To emphasise this further, I used Dulux paint colours in both light and dark hues.

I chose the Classic VJ 100 profile - a timeless tongue and groove panelling - for the bedroom to create a built-in bedhead as well as a shelf for displaying art, books, and sculptural objects. The dark charcoal colour of Dulux Rāwene adds a touch of drama.

For the living room, I chose the Demi Round 20 profile. Bringing warmth and character, the narrow curving rods painted in a soft neutral (Dulux Kai Iwi Lakes) provide a textural yet refined backdrop for the pared-back, Japanese/Nordic-inspired space.

Working with the Surround by Laminex product, I was excited to see how much it elevated the spaces. I love that the timber panels come pre-primed and ready to paint, and the range of profiles spark so many ideas for future interior projects. I’m already looking forward to using it again!

Kristina Dam Studio introduces Sculptural Designs for the Bathroom

1.24.2022

As part of the Frame Collection for Spring-Summer 2022, Kristina Dam Studio has created a range of sculptural pieces for the bathroom, designed for everyday use. With meticulous attention to detail, the bathroom essentials are defined by their refined and clean architectural expression, natural materials, and strong graphic lines.

The new collection consists of mirrors, towels, jewellery displays, hooks, a toilet paper holder, hand soap and hand lotion with a tray and a bottle display.

The Dowel Series
The Dowel mirror is minimalism at its finest, demonstrating the beauty in simplicity and the strength in honest design. Framed in steel and centred with a walnut plug, the sleek mirror is available in three variations (shown below), and can be used beyond the bathroom, in the bedroom, entranceway, living area, or any preferred space for reflection.

The Dowel Hooks and Toilet Paper Holder combine contrasting materials of warm walnut and stainless steel, adding a strong style statement to any surface. The series also includes the wall-mounted Dowel bottle display to house the new Kristina Dam Studio soap and hand lotion.

Minimal Towel Series
Combining graphic design, function, and quality these covetable towels are uniquely designed to be luxurious and long-lasting. Each towel is loomed from premium, long-staple cotton fibres that offer exceptional absorbency. The collection is certified OEKO-TEX®, which guarantees that it is socially responsible and crafted safely from materials tested for harmful substances with environmentally friendly processes. The towels come in three sizes: small for the hands, large for the body and a bold statement towel for the beach.

Jewellery Display
This refined Jewellery Display is as much a tiny treasure trove for precious accessories as it is a small piece of art. Designed to be placed on a shelf or furniture, the display can also be hung on the wall (as shown in the bedroom below) and is crafted in a choice of walnut or natural oak. Reflecting the organic patterns of the beautiful wood grain, no two pieces are the same.

Signature Soap and Hand Lotion
An exciting addition to Kristina Dam Studio's design universe, three signature scents have been carefully selected to reflect the values of the brand. "Classic" is a discreet refreshing scent that combines orange blossom and lemongrass with warm wooden notes. "Minimal" derives its subtle, clean scent from clary sage, cedarwood and green leaves, while "Modern" is a contemporary fragrance that contrasts delicate fresh flowers with ripe orange and warm sage notes.

All soaps have an exfoliating effect due to the natural abrasive grains of apricot kernels, while aloe vera and extracts of ginger and pink pomelo ensure hands are kept soft. The hand lotion provides additional nourishment, soothing dry hands with almond and apricot kernel oil.

Marble Bottle Tray
Beautifully sculptural crafted from Desert Storm Marble, this tray provides the perfect home for the Soap and Hand Lotion.

News from MENU

9.28.2021

Danish design brand MENU reveals new additions to their collection of furniture, lighting and home accessories. From soothing and expressive to bold and charismatic across a seamless mix of tactile fabrics and natural wood, here's a look at some of my favourites pieces.

Brasilia Lounge Chair and Ottoman by Anderssen & Voll

Scandinavian mid-century design aesthetics and Brasilian Modernism meet on the new Brasilia Lounge Chair and corresponding Ottoman, designed by Anderssen & Voll. Originally imagined for The Audo, the luxurious armchair-lounge chair hybrid offers unparalleled sitting comfort thanks to its robust frame and soft upholstery.

“The design was directly inspired by the mood at The Audo. There was something about the setting – wooden sculptures, calm ambience and welcoming colours – that made us think of more exotic variations of Modernism rather than our own familiar Scandinavian roots,” note designers Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll.

Made using traditional joinery techniques, the wooden frame gives the chair personality by way of exaggerated armrests, cylindrical legs at the front and broad, wooden boards at the back. The cushioning seat and backrest add to the sense of ease, while the versatile footrest doubles as a seat for unexpected guests or a resting place for a newspaper or tray. Available in three wood options and a range of soft fabrics from MENU'S extensive range, both can be tailored to fit any setting – alone or together.

Interconnect Candle Holder by Colin King

New York-based stylist and designer Colin King has designed the Interconnect Candle Holder, a bold and illuminating centrepiece of exaggerated proportions. Providing a source of cosy candlelight characterised by its deceptively simple geometric form, the beautiful piece speaks volumes - with or without a candle - as a unique and sculptural work of art.

“As a stylist, I love the idea of a candle holder, but it always fell short through the lens of the camera. I started off with scale and knew I wanted to create something with a real presence. Something with expanse that can live on its own or with other objects,” says Colin King on his new design.

Interconnect Candle Holder is available in polished brass or painted steel.

Epoch Rack and Shelf by Nina Bruun

For their new collection MENU introduces two new products by Danish designer Nina Bruun. Defined by clean lines, intuitive function and innate beauty, the Epoch Clothes Rack works from the idea of concealing unsightly hangers and tags behind something beautiful. A minimally elegant update of the ubiquitous coat rack with a considered combination of gently rounded edges, warm wood and discreet functionality, it is characterised by soft bands of undulating wood that sit like sculptures on a wall. Referencing 1950s design aesthetics and traditional craftsmanship, Epoch is pure in both form and material. Available in natural or dark stained oak, it is carefully sized to fit both purpose and place.

The Epoch Shelf offers streamlined storage for spaces large and small. Improving and beautifying a well-known object with a wide band of wood, it is simple in both form and function. The space-saving wood veneer piece can be suspended alone or in rows of multiples. It features on the one side a deep shelf for everyday clutter and on the other a shelf on which to place decorative objects.

“The Epoch Collection is for still life displays, for everything we love to surround ourselves with – whether that’s objects or clothing – and to be used in personal and creative ways,” notes Bruun on the new collection.

Torso Portable Table Lamp by Krøyer-Sætter-Larsen

The new Torso Portable Table Lamp, designed for MENU by Krøyer-Sætter-Larsen, is a miniature version of their popular full-size design of the same name, which takes its design cues from childhood homes filled with objects shaped by the human hand. Petite and cosy, the diminutive design brings a sense of intimacy to tabletops, replacing the need for candles thanks to its soft, ambient light, adjustable to suit mood and requirement. At the tap of a finger, a brass button on the linen canvas shade effortlessly turns the light on and off, and a concealed USB charger at the base ensures easy charging – wherever it is used.

The lamps are available in Black, Sand and Ruby.

Hashira Collection by Norm Architects

Designed by Norm Architects and named after the Japanese word for column or pillar, this textile lamp is MENU’s take on the traditional Japanese rice paper lantern. Offered in floor, table, pendant and cluster iterations, the elegant series is updated with a new fabric shade. The raw and gossamer slub linen not only acts as a diffuser, projecting the light in multiple directions while creating a cosy, glare-free ambience, it also adds palpable appeal that enhances the softness of an interior – acoustically as well as tactually.

Ishninomaki AA Stool by Torafu Architects

A devastating earthquake in northeast Japan was the catalyst for a new, community-building initiative to empower individuals through DIY. In 2011, Ishinomaki Laboratory began helping the city rebuild itself through simple, DIY furniture workshops using available materials and skills. Taking the concept out into the wider world under the moniker Made in Local, MENU joins forces with the Japanese furniture maker and designer TORAFU ARCHITECTS to create the AA STOOL.

“Ishinomaki Laboratory is now more than just a brand which originated in a disaster-stricken area: it has become a model for small, local brands and ventures contributing to regional revitalisation. And now, through the Made in Local initiative, we can share with our partners around the world the significance, the uniqueness and even the fun of Made in Local, as well as the various lessons that can be drawn from our story. Ishinomaki Laboratory’s furniture is for everyone and everyday life,” says founder Keiji Ashizawa.

Produced in Denmark from locally grown Danish Douglas fir, the handcrafted stool is as simple as it is versatile. The flat-pack design features exposed screws and dimensional lumber, pushing the boundaries of do-it-yourself to create an innovative seat that uses materials effectively. The AA STOOL comes in a pack of two and is available in two sizes, the AA STOOL and AA HIGH STOOL. Each can be used individually or in combination to create a wider seat.
