Ercol Presentation at Good Form

12.01.2017

Last week I visited Good Form to listen to a talk by Henry Tadros, the great-grandson of Ercol's founder and original designer, Lucian Ercolani. Visiting from the UK, Henry provided a unique insight into the iconic furniture brand's history and design direction, from the origins of the company and the post-war design boom to the continued collaborations with leading architects and renowned designers. Exposed to enduring design and furniture from an early age, Henry has a deep respect for the designs of the past and also keeps an eye on the future, with the company launching new pieces at Salone del Mobile.

Ercol designs, manufactures and markets furniture based around the classic pieces designed by Henry’s great grandfather in the 1950s and the company now also works with contemporary international designers to create pieces for the 21st century. Joining Ercol in 2011 with a year of induction working on the factory floor, Henry began working in other parts of the business. In 2013, Henry was appointed to the role of International Sales Manager and was tasked with reintroducing Ercol to the world outside of the UK. The team has since grown to support sales in over thirty countries. Now Head of International and Contract Sales and currently studying at Harvard Business School, Henry has worked closely with Good Form directors Dan and Emma Eagle to curate a selection of sample products for the New Zealand audience.

Ercol Romana extending dining table and Flow dining chairs

One of my favourite Ercol products is the Flow dining chair designed by Tomoko Azumi. Made from beech with a beautiful curvaceous form, the high level of craftsmanship is evident through the refined sweeping lines, elegant tapered seat and the ergonomic stacking function.

The Marino large sofa and Marino chair in leather upholstery are part of the new range from Ercol, arriving at Good Form during December. Awarded a design Guild Mark in 2016, the Marino chair designed by Dylan Freeth features turned elements and exceptional craftsmanship. It will be available in three colour options, bringing a contemporary aesthetic to the home that reflects Ercol's design heritage, complemented by the soft leather textures.

Ercol Nest Sofa by Paola Novone, and Pero shelving unit

Ercol produce some exquisite storage options for the home, including the Pero shelving units designed by Mathew Hilton, the beautiful Romana collection of sideboards and Originals room dividerI particularly love the Romana collection which features subtle detailing and soft shapes for an understated aesthetic. Each piece is made from sustainable pale oak and finished in a clear matt lacquer to both protect the timber and show off its beauty.

For those just discovering Good Form, it is a shop-in-shop experience at Mr. Bigglesworthy, presenting a selection of legacy brands to compliment the Mr. Bigglesworthy mid century modern furniture and contemporary design classics.
