Find the Right White with Dulux

As an interior stylist and designer one of the most common questions I get asked is how to find the ‘right white’ paint colour. An often daunting decision with so many choices, Dulux make it simple with three of their most popular Whites, divided into three types - Neutral, Warm and Cool. Providing a great starting point for your next project, I recommend sampling each one to see how they work with other elements in your room, such as timber finishes and accent colours. It’s amazing how different white paints can look and feel in relation to the surroundings!

Neutral White: Cardrona

One of Dulux's most neutral whites, Cardrona is also one of the most popular. This is because it is so well balanced. With an underlying subtle warmth, Cardrona works in almost any space. 

Cool White: Ōkārito

If you're looking for a cool white, Ōkārito is an ideal choice. Bright, crisp and uplifting, Ōkārito is perfectly suited to modern, open-plan spaces.

Warm White: Sandfly Point 

Warm and creamy, Sandfly Point is a sophisticated white that injects a soft and cosy ambience to any room of the home.

Creating a Bedroom Haven with White Walls + Warm Neutrals

I had planned on painting our bedroom this year. The white walls were starting to feel a little stale and I wanted to inject a bit more warmth. Then we got our new linen headboard and this made a big difference to the space, injecting texture and contrast. While I may still make a change, it's made me appreciate the white walls more, and I'm happy adding touches of colour with bedding and accessories. I still can't go past white teamed with neutral elements such as warm wood and linen bedding, and I especially love it when the sun is streaming in through our sliding doors. These beautiful bedrooms have caught my eye recently and provide some great ideas for creating a neutral bedroom haven all year round.

Homes to Inspire | Bright, Warm + Functional

With a busy week ahead I thought I'd get a head start on the blog with this lovely, light-filled home in Stockholm. Currently for sale via Fantastic Frank, it features white washed walls and floors. These are warmed up with a touch of marble, warm wood accents and soft linen pieces including cushions, bedding and curtains. The cabinets and open shelves are a stylish and functional solution for the open plan living space, providing both storage and a place to display framed prints, small objects and lamps. 

The peg rail in the bedroom is another simple yet clever feature - this post immediately sprung to mind - and I love the beige tones and sweet little wreath on the wall.

Real Estate Round Up

It's been a big week of getting back into the kids' school routine and catching up on the blog and styling projects. I'm also in planning mode for an exciting work trip at the end of the month, so that is taking up a lot of mental space, but in a very good way! Feeling happy but tired, I really love the look of this dreamy bedroom. Painted in a soft grey, the room is light and spacious with white on white bedlinen and accessories. I love the way the curtains have been left long, draping along the floor, while the simple bench seat provides a great place for books and magazines.

Homes to Inspire | Warm Minimalism in New York

Stumbling across this unique apartment today, I was drawn to the white bright space, natural materials and minimalist style. Located in New York's Lower East Side, it belongs to wellness guru Daphne Javitch and her husband Pali Xisto Cornelsen. Airy and spacious, the light filled open-plan living and dining area features large windows and original brickwork painted in white. Wooden flooring and ceiling beams give the apartment loads of warmth. The custom-made sofa frames the space perfectly and looks so inviting don't you think? It was designed by Pali, who Daphne says has an insane mid-century chair collection. One of which is the iconic Pierre Jeanneret chair which has long been a favourite of mine. Breezy All-White Apartment by Laura Seppänen

The latest interior design project by Laura Seppänen Design Agency, this minimalistic but cosy two-bedroom apartment in Helsinki belongs to Stina Mäntyniemi, the head of Cosmopolitan Finland. Her wish was for a clean and monochrome interior without carpets or curtains, along with her one must have piece - the Bertoia chair! 

Laura carried out all of the interior design including the kitchen and hallway renovation, along with the furnishing and final styling. Paper-white colour has been used for the walls, floors and ceilings throughout, creating a clean canvas for layering high quality furniture and a warm mix of natural materials. Although in relatively good shape, the existing kitchen has been modernised with small changes such as the replacement of cabinet doors, sink and faucet and the painting of handles in a contrasting matt black. Unsurprisingly, one of client's favourite features is the Carrara marble which provides the space with texture and a touch of luxury. 

Laura has combined the client's existing furniture with a mix of new pieces carefully selected from Finland and abroad. This effortless blend of Scandinavian design classics with newer Nordic brands has resulted in a stylish home with plenty of personality and charm.
