Black Kitchen by Nordiska Kök in the home of Artist Emma Bernhard

Swedish kitchen company Nordiska Kök is providing ongoing inspiration this year. The latest project to land in my inbox features a stunning black valchromat kitchen designed and built by Nordiska Kök together with artist Emma Bernhard, whose incredible art I've been admiring for some time. I love getting a glimpse into the home of creatives and much like Emma's large scale artworks, her new kitchen is one that really inspires. 

A bold black granite countertop and black accents provide a striking contrast to the warm wooden tones. Comprising three kitchen sections, the design creates a unique and minimalist kitchen layout.

Beautiful styling by Sundling Kickén with Japanese influences and textural elements enhance the clean kitchen aesthetic. Showing respect for the stunning architecture and the surrounding landscape, the stylists chose beautiful ceramics by Kajsa Cramer, Västergården and Birgitta Jannesson, glass bowls by Martha Louise Karlsson and cutting board and wooden cutlery by Serax.

Moodboard Series with Fisher & Paykel for Homestyle

The latest Homestyle magazine arrived just in time for our trip away, providing the perfect holiday reading. In this inspiring renovation issue, my moodboard in collaboration with Fisher & Paykel centres around an all-black Scandi-style kitchen.

Available for bookings, Nord House is a holiday home located in Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula just south of Melbourne. Designed by Poss Samperi, the kitchen features black-on-black materials offset by whitewashed floors. Warm wooden accents accentuate the beautiful Nordic style and I especially love the timber table which acts as both a contrasting focal point and central place to gather at mealtimes. Sleek Fisher & Paykel appliances including the spacious Pyrolytic Built-In Oven, the Chimney Box Rangehood and Double Dishdrawer Dishwasher fit seamlessly, providing ease of use and functionality.

Dark and Alluring Bedrooms

Creating a cosy sanctuary is high on the list when it comes to bedroom styling and there's no denying that darker, richer tones evoke feelings of warmth and comfort. For an added sense of drama, charcoal or black walls will always deliver. Dark blues, earthy tones and my current favourite 'greige' (a combination of grey and beige) are also popular choices right now.

To create contrast, try pairing dark coloured walls with bedding in a softer hue. Alternatively, pair pale grey walls with bedlinen in deeper colours such as charcoal, navy or black. Continue the theme with interesting or moody artworks and add an array of textiles with linens, wool throws, cushions and rugs.

Lighting is also a crucial element and these bedrooms offer lots of ideas by way of pendants, wall lamps and bedside table lamps. For added texture I especially love seeing a touch of brass. Finish off with a plant or two and you'll have created a room you'll never want to leave!

Black Kitchens | Six Picks

I recently visited a friend who is renovating, and seeing her kitchen in progress inspired today's post. Located in a beautiful big villa with high studs, wooden floorboards, and freshly painted white walls, the kitchen has been given new life with expansive black cabinetry, and it looks amazing. Visually striking, the black finish also creates a beautifully sleek and timeless look. Since then she has installed stainless steel benchtops and a marble tiled splashback. I can't wait to see an update! A classic combination, the addition of marble softens the overall look of black and stainless steel, while adding further texture.

I couldn't do a black themed kitchen post without including one of the incredible designs by Danish brand Vipp. Their signature powder-coated black workbenches and narrow (4mm) stainless steel bench tops provide timeless functionality and an industrial edge.

Warm wood goes hand in hand with black kitchens. Wooden stools are a great choice for an island, while smaller accessories such as cutting boards and trays also work well. Pop in a few metallics for added texture and warmth. I love the brass touches in the kitchen below, including the tap mixer, glasses tray and pendant light.

Paint it Black

If you've ever been tempted to paint a wall in your home black, these gorgeous images will have you running to the paint shop. I love the how the black walls below provide a bold contrast with the white flooring and cabinetry. They also make the black and white artworks by the homeowner Ylva Skarp, a calligrapher and designer really pop.

Wanting to make her new brass kitchen tap stand out, Nina Holst of Stylizimo decided to stain her DIY plywood splash back in black. A clever alternative to using black tiles, I love the way the texture of the plywood is still visible, and the little shelf is an added bonus!

Rather than close in this tiny kitchen, the black painted wall actually helps define the dining area.

Henriette Amlie Kalbekken of Designlykke has not only painted her bedroom wall black, she has given the legs of her marble table a coat of black paint, as well as her bookshelves.

Painting furniture is great for those who want to test the waters. I also really like the subtlety of these painted window frames. It adds a nice contrast and accentuates their impressive height.

Finally, black painted floors. Not easy to keep to clean, but together with white walls and ceilings, they look absolutely stunning.

Dark Walls in the Bedroom | x 3

There is something very appealing about a dark moody bedroom, especially when teamed with beautiful luxe linen bedding. The kind that drapes perfectly with just the right amount of crinkle, in soft muted colours and earthy tones, to create a stunning contrast against black or very dark walls. Black light fittings blend seamlessly (the FLOS 265 Lamp is still a fave of mine), greenery 'pops' and you cannot go wrong with a white artwork or black and white photographic art to add further contrast.

I love how the headboard and open wardrobe in this next bedroom has been painted in the same dark grey colour as the walls. The workspace has been integrated into the room and  features shelves and a desk painted in the same grey, offset by a gorgeous muted shade of coral.

Now one for the kiddies, because who says they can't have a dark bedroom too? I absolutely LOVE how Apphia Michael, the online fashion editor for Wallpaper*Magazine has taken a brave risk and painted her daughter Tallis' bedroom walls in an almost-black colour. Accents of pink and natural wood by way of the cot, Muuto Dots and Hay Gym Hooks add a soft touch, while the gorgeous MiniWilla poster and YarningMade blanket look amazing against the dark backdrop.
