My Visit to HANA - New Zealand's First Infrared Healing Sanctuary

7.01.2020

Last week I had the pleasure of visiting HANA, New Zealand's first dedicated Infrared Sauna and Light Therapy Wellness Centre, located in the heart of Grey Lynn, Auckland. HANA, which translates to shine, glow and radiate in Maori, was founded by Sarah Higgins with the aim of providing a calming and healing sanctuary that encourages the art of relaxation, and taking time for self-care.

Consciously designed with a calming and modern aesthetic by Pennant & Triumph, I felt an immediate sense of calm as soon as I entered the beautiful space. Greeted by Sara, I was interested to learn that her personal wellness journey battling unexplained fatigue was what led her to the healing power of infrared saunas and light therapies. “I spent years seeking answers from multiple health practitioners, trying to get to the root cause. Through this process, I learnt a lot about alternative options to conventional treatments and came across the healing benefits of saunas and more recently red light therapy. I wanted to be able to make it easy for people to access these treatments.”

With a career background as a Pharmacist with nutritional and environmental medicine training, Sara is passionate about guiding people on their own journey of wellness. "Our bodies detoxify through our skin, and infrared saunas and light therapy help to activate and encourage the process. Sometimes we just need to give it some time, heat and space to heal.”

While hugely popular in New York and London, the concept of a wellness space dedicated to infrared sauna is completely new to NZ, but its use is proven to provide head-to-toe benefits such as full detoxification, ultimate relaxation, alleviation from pain, glowing skin, more energy, improved circulation and a strengthened immune system. The full body Photobiomodulation (red light) therapy pods, which use red and near infrared light to help mitochondria (the power house of our bodies cells) to function better. The treatment comes scientifically backed to also repair sun damage, reduce wrinkles, speed muscle recovery, heal scarring and stretch marks, reduce inflammation, boost testosterone levels and enhance collagen.

I got to experience both the red light therapy pod and sauna during my visit, and it was such a treat. I felt a deep sense of relaxation and the pain in my muscles (which were sore from a workout the day before) melted away. My skin was glowing following the treatments and I could feel the benefits for may hours afterwards. I can see how this could become addictive! Post sweat, I completed my spa ritual with a private shower that runs filtered water - a critical component post sauna - and products from my favourite skin and hair care brand Sans Ceuticals along with luxury towels by Baina.

The design of the space was a key factor for Sara when bringing her overall vision to life. Wanting to gain a little more insight, I spoke to Justin Roderique, Architectural Director of Pennant & Triumph...

Can you tell us a little bit about the brief, and the inspiration behind the design?
The HANA brief was to create a unique retreat environment within an existing industrial warehouse space at the Scrap Yard development in Grey Lynn. Our response and ultimate goal was to create a sanctuary for customers to relax and unwind within a calming and unique space.

Were there any obstacles long the way, and if so, how did you overcome them?
The challenge was to separate the existing base building industrial feel and provide that sense of calm the moment customers entered the space. We wanted to provide a space that transported customers to another place, give each customer an authentic experience and make them feel good and wanting more.

What materials did you use to bring the vision to life, and how does the palette play a part in the overall concept?
When establishing our initial concepts the material choice and detailing was a key consideration. Materials needed to feel cohesive and work with the existing base material palette. Natural stone and off white textured hand rendered plaster was chosen to warm the space whilst letting the light play and transform throughout the day. Bespoke timber joinery is showcased against the existing concrete floor. Natural stone tiles line the base of the showers contrasting against a textured olive wall tile and brass fixtures and fittings.

The design features beautiful arches and bespoke elements. Talk us through these...
A minimal approach put a real emphasis on a high level of detail throughout. The final layout was created to provide a sense of discovery with the use of small openings and sight lines throughout to allow subtle cues to the space that lies beyond. Curves and arches were introduced to soften the space and also provide an organic feel. Humans naturally react positively and feel more comfortable towards curves and soft edges.

The use of natural and artificial lighting was a key factor to allow our client to set the mood at different times of the day or night but also to allow for different spaces to work separately as required. To ensure a fully considered result all elements within the space including the joinery, fixtures and fitting were bespoke - designed and manufactured for HANA allowing us to showcase a space that allows customers to be immersed within.

Holism Retreat by Studio Tate

6.24.2020

Holism Retreat by Studio Tate is a destination spa at the newly opened 5star MGallery by Sofitel Hotel Chadstone in Melbourne. With an approach that embodies the transformative process of the wellness experience, the practice worked closely with construction specialist Cobild, reimagining the existing base build as an urban sanctuary.

At home amongst its luxury fashion neighbours, with its own unique visual identity, Holism combines colour, texture and form - a layered canvas of muted, desert hues enlivened with arched thresholds and mirrors, sculptural pink granite, curved walls and soft, recessed lighting.

A sculptural reception desk featuring faceted pink granite, brass inlay and mosaic greets guests on arrival. Embracing the desk, a gently curving wall is layered with stone and glossy timber shelves atop brass rods, providing space for curated retail display. Brass accents have been used throughout to encourage seamless experience of nine treatment rooms, a LED light therapy treatment lounge, yoga studio, private consultation suite and guest amenities.

Mindful of each client’s unique needs, the bespoke shelving, in room seating and matte brass hooks offer choice for storage. Equipment is artfully concealed behind large v groove sliding doors that reveal clay coloured joinery. Bookending the spa, the yoga studio and LED light therapy treatment lounge feature ceilings painted terracotta and blush. Restorative accent colours that highlight maps of exposed pipe, the overall palette is genteel and softly spoken, the spaces humble in scale.

Inspired to create a visual narrative of rough texture polished to smooth facet, Holism Retreat by Studio Tate is an intelligent realisation of holistic refinement.

Moodboard | A Relaxed Weekend Away

6.11.2020

Although international travel is still off the cards we can now travel domestically, and with the tourism industry in desperate need of support it's a great time to plan a trip within NZ. Our beautiful country has so much to offer and I'm currently dreaming of a laid-back weekend escape. I know one thing I will be packing is plenty of reading material. When it comes to the Black Lives Matter movement, I've found Instagram to be a great source for links to educational resources, and introductions to black-owned brands (such as Cold Laundry featured below), content creators and artists. I've also put together a long list of books I plan to read, with a couple included below. My favourite skin and hair products are by NZ-brand Sans Ceuticals. Perfect for my eczema-prone skin, I love that the products are multifunctional, simplifying both daily rituals and packing. With pure and sustainable ingredients and no harmful chemicals, I swear by the Activator 7 Body, Hair + Face  Oil, and have recently started using the Goji Body + Face Cleansing Oil and the Cellular Repair Body + Face Lotion (in addition to using the Sans hair products). One of my favourite NZ fashion brands Juliette Hogan has launched JH Lounge, a capsule offering comprising of five essential pieces, all with a refined, casual aesthetic. Bringing together the strength, stability and easy-care properties of BCI cotton with the soft and luxurious handle of sustainable and traceable cashmere, the resulting yarn is a beautiful lightweight fine gauge knit. The perfect year round next-to-skin layer, I'm in love with my new long sleeved T-shirt. For a stylish Weekender in the perfect Taupe colour, I have my eye on COAST New Zealand who have launched a new range of Bespoke Luggage. Handcafted in NZ to order, the Classic Canvas collection's 5 styles are available in a vast range of colours, and can be personalised with your initials or name embroidered on the external pocket. Staying In | Creating a Bathroom Sanctuary for Self-Care

3.24.2020

Referring back to last week's blog post Staying In: Simple Ways to Enhance your Home Room by Room, you may have noticed that I left out the bathroom. The reason for this was that I wanted to do a separate post, with a focus on self-care. If you're feeling overwhelmed, stressed or anxious - all perfectly normal responses to what is happening with the pandemic right now - it's important to go easy on yourself and take time for self-care. For me, I know this will include keeping active and getting outdoors, staying connected to friends (through text, phone and video calls), reading uplifting books (and taking a break from the news and social media). I also believe that the bathroom can provide a sanctuary within your home to escape and unwind.

With NZ now transitioning into lockdown, we are adjusting to being at home, all together, all the time. I know that it will be more important than ever to carve out a little 'me-time', even if it's just ten minutes everyday. Whether your bathroom is spacious or compact, needing a full makeover or just looking a little tired, there are ways of improving the overall vibe so that it becomes a special place to retreat to.

Declutter and organise. If you're a hoarder of beauty products, be ruthless and keep only what you know you'll use. If storage is limited, organise your products. Woven baskets work really well (Corcovado have a wonderful selection), or use a little toolbox such as this Yamazaki one.

Bring some nature inside. You may not be able to shop for plants right now, but you can always forage outside! I love the look of simple branches like in the image above.

Run a Bath. The bathroom is the one room in the house in which you can find solitude. If you're feeling strung out or need time to simply breathe and gather your thoughts, book in time for soak in a warm bath. Light a candle and add some bath oils to nourish the skin.

Skin and Hair Care Rituals. I love taking the time to care for my skin and hair, trying a new serum, applying a face mask or conditioning treatment to my hair. I'm looking forward to going make-up free for a while and letting my skin breathe. I try to make face masks a regular ritual but often, when life gets busy, it goes by the wayside. Now is a great time to get back on track. Hand cream is another must right now with so much hand washing. Remember to support local businesses at this time. NZ brands that I love are Sans Ceuticals (I swear by their Activator 7 Body + Hair + Face Oil and Hair Care products) and Ashley & Co (for beautiful Botanical Hand Wash and Intensive Hand Hydration).

Basecamp Power Yoga by Studio 11:11

2.21.2020

For their lastest interior design project, Melbourne-based Studio 11:11 have transformed an Auckland, inner-city warehouse into a warm and inviting meeting ground for Basecamp Power Yoga. Celebrating the rawness of the existing architecture, merging old with new, Studio 11:11 have created a unique yoga studio with character; a perfectly imperfect space to practice.

Exploring Basecamp’s philosophy of creating a solid foundation in life, Studio 11:11 translated this into the architecture. Rising up from the ground level and aligning perfectly with the central axis of the existing roofline, a staircase leads up to the main studio representing a physical elevation. This transition zone allows the members to mentally and physically make the journey up to their mats for a heightened and focused experience.

Uneven and rough textures were used to form a perfect marriage between the existing and new built elements. Washed timber and textured wall render create an essential yet tactile palette, whilst exposed off-form concrete walls and custom hot-rolled steel elements bring a grounding strength back into this power yoga studio. Natural cork lines the main studio floor, bringing a warmth and softness to the surface under body during yoga practise, demonstrating a deep understanding of the impact of the built environment on our wellbeing.

Collaborating with local metal craftsman, SaintLeo, to create a sculptural coat rack, this provides a central focus in the beautiful entry space. A large raw basalt rock lies at the base with the seamless insertion of steel emerging from the natural stone to create a refined yet abstract furniture piece.

I love that this natural, raw feel carries through to the decor with rustic ceramics and textural furniture pieces. There's also a beautiful connection to the outdoor areas. Studio 11:11 have created an environment alive with tactility and natural materials whilst keeping the strength and gym-like foundations that reflect Basecamp’s core values of resilience, empowerment & adventure.
