Deck Update with COAST New Zealand | Part Two

I'm thrilled to be sharing this latest update of our deck as the final part of this blog series for 2018. In Part One of our collaboration with COAST, I talked about the process I went through for creating our bespoke Beanbags, from choosing the right size and design, through to the fabric selection. Deciding on the Marine Bean XL and Marine Bean Ottoman, I then chose from an extensive range of  Sunbrella Fabric. Wanting a warm beige to compliment our existing decking and black railing/home exterior, the Tresco Linen has given the exact result I was looking for. Not only does it fit beautifully with our new Outdure seating, the colour and texture compliments the interior of our home, providing a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces.  

The Beanbags are such a comfy addition to our deck. Designed for indoors and out and easy to move around, I sometimes bring the Ottoman inside at night to pop my feet up on while watching TV! COAST also sell a wide range of throw cushions made from the same marine-grade Sunbrella brand fabric as the Marine Bean. The perfect accessory for both our new Beanbags and seating, we purposely designed the seating with space underneath to store some extra cushions! I popped into the COAST showroom to pick some out and they had a great range of colours on offer. Some of my favourites which are featured here on our deck are Fern, Taupe, Silica Barley and in the small cushions, Hybrid Smoke and Rust. As mentioned in the last deck update, we're also planning on getting some custom squabs made for our Outdure seating with Sunbrella fabric from COAST.

As with our indoor living spaces, I love having throws on the deck for added comfort, texture and warmth in the evenings. COAST have a beautiful collection of throws for every season. I featured their Mackenzie Woollen Throw in the last Deck Update, and for today's I've included the Antigua Linen Waffle throw in natural and the Stripe Linen Laguna throw in Mustard. Both lightweight, they are perfect for the warmer months.

Deck Update with Outdure | Part Two

Following on from the first part of my Deck Update series with Outdure, I'm thrilled to be sharing the reveal of our new look deck. In case you missed it, in the first post I talked about wanting to make our outdoor space more livable. To make the most of the compact area while creating a cohesive look, built-in seating has always been high on the wish list. Exterior specialists Outdure came up with the ideal solution, both designing and building our new seating, to fit perfectly around the edge of the deck.

Talking through the design process in my last post, I also shared a look at the concept drawings. The team at Outdure then suggested some further refinements to the design, and these have made a world of difference to the final seat. With clean lines and detailing, one of my favourite elements is the open ended design on one side. I love how the asymmetry creates a more visually interesting aesthetic. Other features include a deep seat pan to allow for outdoor cushions (which I plan to get made), and a lower back rest. Interestingly this provides a more comfortable way to lean back and rest your elbows. Such important details to get right, we couldn't be happier with the result.

Our beautiful seating is made from ResortDeck — an amazing product that combines the natural beauty of hardwood timber decking with the added benefit of being extremely durable. Available in six natural colours and finishes, the Sea Salt colour we chose is perfect for our space, creating a sense of cohesion indoors and out. It feels amazing to be finally using our space as we had envisaged. It's like having a whole new room to enjoy, and the timing couldn't be more perfect with the summer holidays around the corner!

Deck Update with Coast New Zealand | Part One

Following on from the first instalment of our Deck Update, I'm now excited to be collaborating with COAST New Zealand. While our new Outdure seating is underway, I've been busy choosing fabric for our COAST Luxury Beanbags, which are being custom-made through their bespoke fabric service. I've been sharing a few sneak peeks along the way on my Instagram stories, but before I get into the selection process in more depth, I wanted to share a little about the NZ brand. Synonymous with luxury, COAST are beautifully aligned with New Zealanders' love of the outdoors, and this has shaped their unique story from the very beginning, including their inspiring design process and incredible attention to detail. 

When COAST NZ founders Nicola and Alex Webster launched in 2003, they had a specific goal to establish a luxury brand that would reflect New Zealand's unique quality of life. From the outset they drew inspiration from the rewards and challenges of life by the sea - simple, relaxing and beautiful, but also rugged and unforgiving. COAST started out as a specialist supplier to super-yachts and this remains a significant part of the business. It also resulted in them borrowing many of the materials and methods that were previously the reserve of luxury yacht-building. Not only do contemporary ocean-going sailing yachts need to be comfortable, even opulent, they have to withstand the harshest conditions at sea, and this lead the way for their design process, which centres as much around materials and construction as on aesthetics and style. The result is a range of products that are not only enduring, but timeless.

I visited the beautiful COAST Showroom to see and test out the Luxury Beanbags, which sit alongside the other COAST products including natural textile Throws and Beachtowels, Canvas Luggage and Leather Goods.

With rigorous and uncompromising attention to detail, COAST always use the most enduring fabrics and parts, including Sunbrella marine-grade fabrics. Furthermore, they hand-make the majority of their products to the highest possible standard right here in NZ, ensuring that they can maintain the strictest control over quality and workmanship.

Relaxing on a COAST luxury beanbag at home has been a dream for many years, especially since we built. And with summer fast approaching, it's the perfect time to be getting one for our deck. The first step was choosing from the range of COAST Luxury Beanbags. There are two collections on offer, the award-winning Marine Bean and Isla Collections, both of which can be found ashore in 5 star hotels and resorts from Queenstown to the Maldives, as well as private homes, villas and beach houses worldwide. Designed for relaxing on the deck, around the pool, out on the lawn or at the beach, the beanbags are tough enough to stay outdoors all year round, yet stylish enough to transition indoors. 

The Marine Beans feature nine precisely shaped panels, giving them their uniquely comfortable shape, while the Marine Bean chair offers a more structured seating alternative. The Isla Collection combines all the comfort of the Marine bean, with the flexibility of modular furniture. 

All COAST outdoor beanbags are designed and made in New Zealand from marine grade Sunbrella brand fabric and are guaranteed against fading and deterioration. Each beanbag includes a waterproof liner, allowing the Sunbrella shell to be removed for cleaning, airing or winter storage.

Taking into account our relaxed lifestyle and the size of our deck, we decided on the Marine Bean XL and Marine Bean Ottoman. The next step was to choose the Sunbrella Fabric. COAST have a selection of stock fabric colours, but they also offer a bespoke service, where you can choose from an extensive range of colours and textural finishes. Amazed at the vast selection on offer, for this part of the process I took home some samples to see how they worked against our deck, and alongside the Outdure ResortDeck which will be used for the built in seating. My main goal was to stay in the realm of neutrals that I love, without going too light or too dark. In addition to fitting with the decking and black deck railing, I want the colour to compliment both the dark stained cedar exterior of our home, and our home's neutral interior, for a seamless connection between indoors and out. 

After narrowing down a shortlist of grey, beige and sage hues, the Sunbrella fabric I chose is Tresco Linen. A beautiful warm beige, I do believe I found the perfect colour! As with all the COAST beanbags, you can choose to match the piping fabric to the panel colour, or have it in a contrasting colour. I decided to keep ours all one colour, for a clean, streamlined look. 

COAST also offer a range of Sunbrella Outdoor Cushions and they sell the Sunbrella Fabric by the metre. I'm already looking at fabrics for Outdure seating squabs and I'm so excited to see the changes to our deck come together over the next couple of weeks.

Deck Update with Outdure | Part One

I recently discovered Outdure while admiring the decking they had designed and supplied for the beautiful Coast New Zealand showroom. With offices in NZ, Australia and further afield, the NZ-born company is changing the way exterior spaces are designed and built both here and around the world with their revolutionary QwickBuild system. Working across large commercial projects and resorts through to small residential properties like ours, I was excited to find out what Outdure could do to update our deck and make it more liveable. 

Other than paint the railing, we have done very little to our deck since building our home. In fact the focus has been almost entirely on the interior, and with summer fast approaching, it's great to finally be making some plans. Deciding early on we'd like to incorporate some seating, we have had various pieces of furniture come and go over the years, but nothing has really worked for the area. Because the deck is quite compact, my husband and I have always loved the idea of a custom-made seating solution that would be streamlined with the edge of the deck. We feel this would give a sense of permanence while also creating better use of the small space. 

First we arranged for the Outdure team to visit our home to look at our area and talk through the options. I was really interested to learn about Outdure's Qwickbuild system. A modular framing system for decking, tiles and turf, it has been designed as a specialist decking solution for low height installations (e.g. over waterproof membranes on rooftop decks) and is also ideal for installation over natural ground, concrete slabs and existing tiles or pavers. Made-to-measure by Outdure, QwickBuild aluminium frames replace bulky traditional timber frames with lightweight, durable aluminium modules and because they are prefabricated, this greatly reduces costly time on-site. With the sample below, we were shown how the QwickBuild system works, with hidden interlocking fastenings. These support Outdure's contemporary range of surfaces, including the premium ResortDeck series, plus in-house ranges of structural tiles and high-grade turf. Also compatible as a highly stable and low-profile framework for hardwood decking timbers, additional accessories include ventilation grilles, deck jacks, vertical privacy screens and lighting.

The ResortDeck is an amazing product that combines the natural beauty and matte finish of a freshly oiled hardwood timber deck with the added benefits of being extremely durable, virtually colourfast, dimensionally stable and easy to maintain. How is this possible? Well, the board core is made from 95% recyclable materials including highly density polyethylene & wood fibres. It also features a co-extruded polymer shield that completely encapsulates the board in an impermeable layer of protection, making the boards impervious to moisture, while giving superior UV protection, and scratch, fade and mould resistance. It also means no splinters or leeching, and no need for staining, oiling or painting. How's that for low-maintenance? If we were to build again, we would definitely use this for our deck. We even contemplated replacing our deck with the ResortDeck for a cohesive look, but decided to stick with our existing deck (as it's still pretty new), and focus on the seating. Because ResortDeck comes in six natural colours and finishes, we were able to choose an option that would compliment our existing space. We decided on Sea Salt which works really nicely with our deck's weathered finish. 

These are a few of the inspirational images I've saved over the years on Pinterest (the image top right is an Outdure project), and a moodboard I created with some of Outdure ResortDeck and Tile samples. Looking through the Outdure gallery, this process also got us thinking about our neglected backyard. We've come away with some great ideas for this area too!

Now getting back to our deck... after talking through our seating ideas, Outdure provided imagery from some of their previous seating projects for us to consider. Deciding on a design, they then measured up the deck and came back to us with an initial concept drawing. From here we made a couple of tweaks around the size. We also changed the back boards from vertical to horizontal with a slight slope for added comfort, and added space underneath the seating. Once the design was finalised, we were sent the construction plans to sign off, and then it was ready for the manufacturing process.  The construction plans are really comprehensive, showing every little detail, so here's a less technical look at the finalised concept drawing.

This week Outdure sent us a progress photo which is super exciting, and the next step is to arrange delivery! Look out for Part Two of this series when I'll reveal the new seating.
