KAMP.studio | Limited Edition Sculptural Collection

2.25.2017

Auckland based design and art practice KAMP.studio has released a collection of limited edition sculptural products for the home and body. The 2017 collection includes a desk pen designed to be cherished forever, nature-inspired jewellery and a number of home ware products. Thoughtfully designed with incredible attention to detail, every piece in the collection is made by a combination of advanced 3D printing technologies and traditional handcraft.

Orbit Tea Set

Press Pour Over Brewer

KAMP.studio was founded in 2016 by award winning designer Daniel Kamp, whose work has been exhibited all around the world. Creating sculptural projects inspired by both natural and technological evolution, the studio’s first release of products aims to encourage an ethical approach to the use of 3D printing. By pairing the technology with elegant design, handcraft and quality materials, the studio believes it can make products that people will love forever, rather than tire of and throw away. All products in the collection are limited edition and made to order, to encourage a feeling of personal connection between owner and belonging.

Press Pour Over Brewer, Press Espresso Set and Poise Spoon

When I first saw the collection I was captivated by the unique designs and interesting shapes of the pieces. The Orbit Tea Set has a very pure form, with simple spherical shapes inspired by science. Combining the accuracy of 3D printing with the beautiful imperfection that can only be achieved by hand craft, each object in the set is custom made in porcelain and solid bronze. Orbit's purpose is purely beauty, serving not as product but as sculpture. The Press Pour Over Brewer on the other hand, combines both. Part coffee maker, part sculpture, the stunning set, which is available in stone grey or gloss white, includes a press jug and lid hand cast in solid, heavy porcelain from 3D printed moulds. Paired with the exquisite Gold Cone Dripper by Osaka Coffee, the hand casting and glazing process allows imperfections to make each set unique.

Orbit Scoop

The beautiful Harmony is a series of one of a kind vessels made from 3D printed porcelain and hand carved New Zealand jade

Elegantly proportioned and beautifully textured, the Orbit Scoop is a tea and coffee scoop with a pure profile and unique materiality. Each scoop is 3D printed in wax then hand cast in bronze, sterling silver or black silver plated brass. A fingerprint-like texture on the interior surface of the scoop shows the layers of ‘growth’ during the 3D printing process.

Era Pen

The signature product of the collection is Era; a sculptural desk pen created in response to the staggering number of ballpoint pens disposed of every year. Designed to be cherished forever, the Era Pen is 3D printed in wax, then hand cast in luxurious metals (solid bronze or sterling silver) and left with a raw finish that is imperfect from day one and patinas with age. What's more, the Era has a twisted triangular profile that makes it specific to either left or right-handed owners, and when not in use, the pen stands in a solid porcelain base, forming a piece of desktop sculpture. Genius!

“The Era Pen is the perfect representation of our intention to use the accuracy of new technologies and the beautiful imperfection of handcraft, to create products that are explorative, ethical and elegant all at once.” – Daniel Kamp

The collection includes beautiful jewellery designs including organic rings and intricately interlinked necklaces

The KAMP.studio collection will be ever-evolving, with limited edition products turning over regularly. With several pieces currently in the works which I'm already excited about - the POISE sculptural cutlery and Heavenly Spheres look AMAZING - The Studio believes this to be a more sustainable alternative to mass production as diversity and uniqueness are imperative to creating emotional connection. I couldn't agree more.

The collection is available to purchase online

Alex Buckman Studio

5.20.2016

As a lover of all things indoor plant related, I was excited to receive news of the Arbor Planter this week. The first product in a new series by Award-winning NZ designer Alex Buckman, the Arbor Planter was inspired by both nature and the need to create an object that could transform a space with ease. Celebrating functional, honest details, the Planter has been created with high quality materials and precision CNC machining. The result is a clean contemporary design that I have no doubt will appeal to many. Designed and hand assembled at Alex Buckman Studio in Wellington, the planter is available in black, white and pistachio as well as custom powder coated colours.

A masters graduate of industrial design, Alex also works at Weta Workshop in their 3D modelling team. Last year he was awarded a Bronze at the Best Awards for NZ's Best Product Design for his Colony lighting system. Aesthetically beautiful, the concept behind this product is really intriguing. Combining LED technology and 3D printing, the diffusers take on organic forms made up of fractal patterns – geometries found throughout nature such as splitting crystals, splintering lungs, rivers, leaves, branches and snowflakes. These decorations have been proven to have positive psychological effects on people, as they are ingrained in the evolution of the human race. As Alex explains ‘it was important that this lighting system benefited the user both in functionality and general wellbeing to provoke the idea of how we design objects for interior spaces in the future.’ Available as a Pendant, Chandelier and Floor lamp, see the full range here.

Interior Inspo | 3D Roundup

10.02.2014

I'm giving you a dose of interior inspo today courtesy of the talented 3D artists who publish their work on Behance. Starting with a lovely loft apartment with incredible ceiling height and windows, followed by a clean Scandi-style bedroom design, both of these were designed by Tsvetan Stoykov. I can't help but notice his bedside table has been inspired by NZ designer Timothy John's Sidekick Collection!

Ever since I first showed you the incredible interior design work of Raya Todorova, I've been checking in regularly, eager to see new work. Here are her latest room designs which are in keeping with her signature monochrome style. I love the mix of marble and metallic accents in the kitchen, and the gorgeous cot and wallpaper in the sweet little nursery.

This elegant apartment featuring a mix of black and white floors and steel framed doors is a conceptual project by Oskar Firek. I've also picked out one of his stunning bathrooms to show you, from another inspiring home he designed here.

I came across a lot of cool bedrooms, but this one, La Maison d'inspiration IKEA by Alexandre Jarek, is my pick for today. It makes me want to step inside the room, walk across the beautiful herringbone floor and climb straight into the cosy bed and layers of luxe bedding.

Before I go I just wanted to tell you about a giveaway that's currently being run by BNZ GoodHome, the new website and quarterly email for which I am one of the contributors. Containing a collection of inspiration and expert advice for smart homeowners, if you sign up now, you could win a gorgeous Kate & Kate Jagger blanket from LET LIV! The offer is available until October 7, 2014. To sign up (you don't have to be a BNZ customer) pop over here

Designa | Home Design Inspiration

4.03.2014

Anyone who has ever built or renovated a home will have spent time looking through design brochures, either in print or online. I remember looking through so many bathroom catalogues it made my head spin! I've just come across the online catalogue for a design company in Denmark Designa, who create quality flatpack furniture for kitchens, bathrooms and wardrobes. The products have a timeless quality and have been beautifully styled with a mix of simplicity and elegance.

I love the clean lines of the white cabinetry in the kitchen and concrete flooring. Dark wood, black, copper and glass accessories provide the perfect finishing touches.

What's amazing is that these images have been created using 3D technology. 3D artists are so good these days, it's sometimes near impossible to differentiate between 3D and real-life photos. The finer elements and attention to detail is incredible, right down to the streams of sunlight and inclusion of Danish design brands like Muuto. I did a bit of research and found that the 3D company in Denmark who produced these is 3d-empire, who also work with Danish brands By Lassen and Hay.

Designa has many stores throughout Denmark and Norway as well as distributors in Asia, but for those of us outside of these areas, I think the catalogue alone can provide plenty of tips for choosing products locally. You'll gain ideas for home design in terms of layout and use of space, as well as plenty of styling inspo! Take a look here
