Felix Furniture | 2017 Collection Launch

5.11.2017

I first introduced you to Melbourne based furniture makers Felix Furniture last year. A small yet dynamic business, Felix Furniture was established in 2014 by Antonia Morrongiello and Ian Anderson; a couple who were inspired to follow their passion after years of making furniture for themselves. The ethos of this thriving small business is about good, honest design, using sustainably sourced materials to create a range of contemporary handcrafted, plywood furniture. Since launching three years ago, Felix Furniture has quickly grown to be a respected Australian furniture brand, recognised for their unique designs, quality craftsmanship and refined industrial aesthetic. This year they opened their second pop-up shop in Richmond and have now launched their latest furniture collection, which I am delighted to share with you today.

The collection consists of six new pieces for the home, including an Entertainment Unit, Buffet, Dining Chair, Coffee Table, Side Tables and Bench Seat. The duo drew inspiration for their new collection from various materials, finishes and textures. ‘I have always been a tactile person, it’s all about how it feels under hand’ Antonia says. ‘Mixing materials and finishes allows us to draw out so many layers within the piece of furniture and develop a sense of depth.’

In keeping with the Felix Furniture aesthetic, the designs are minimalist and clean, but the couple has branched out with different pieces, introducing new angles and curves not previously seen in their body of work. ‘Our designs continue to evolve as we grow as a business’ Ian says.

Plywood remains the signature, core material used within each of the pieces, with the Mota dining chair solely constructed in Birch plywood. In addition, powder coated steel is featured in the new Lilly Coffee Table and the Douglas Bench Seat, while coloured wax heros the wood grain on the Stanley Side Tables. The new material the team is most excited about however is cork, with the introduction of the Kork collection. Ian says Cork is an extremely undervalued material. 'It comes in a range of incredible grains and colours and it is extremely sustainable. Cork is harvested directly from the tree once every nine years, allowing the tree to regenerate and continue living’.

The entire range is designed and made by the couple in their small workshop in Sunbury. ‘We really value the integrity of Australian designed and made products, so it is important to us to keep Felix local and source only from other small makers and suppliers in the community’ Antonia says. The duo have a real hands on approach to their designs and the making process. Each piece is carefully cross-checked by each other ensuring that the focus is on attention to detail.
